I've been looking for a used JD in the 20-25 HP range, and having had no luck, I've turned to the rental yards. I've found two. One is a 1995 855 with over 1600 hours on it. It has a loader, box scraper and rear hydrolics for $10,000. It's pretty beat up looking, dents, and some paint missing, but seems to run smooth and strong. The other is a 1996 855 with over 500 hours, loader, box scraper, but no rear hydralics for $12,000. The body is in better shape, but more $$$. Does anyone have any experience, thoughts, or advise on buying a tractor from a rental yard? I guess my apprehension is that folks tend to abuse rental equipment...any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.

Would you buy a used car after 100 different people had driven it? Be very, very careful when buying from a rental store. They rent to anyone, and each and everyone will treat that piece of equipment differently and especialy when they do not own it!!! Keep both eyes open or at least have a pre-sale inspection done on it. ....

It also seems to me to be a good idea to see and get a copy of the maintanance record. I would think that, even if used hard, proper maintanance would keep the machine in good shape. If they don't keep a written log, I'd run. ....

I would thing long and hard about buying a rental tractor. I rented one before I bought mine. I rented it for eight hours, I used it hard all eight hours trying to get the most out of my money. From the looks of the tractor, everyone else who used the tractor did the same. Don't get in a hurry, post on boards "tractor wanted" , keep you eyes on the news papers and keep checking with dealers, sooner or later a really good tractor will turn up. I found my jd 755 on a tractor forum, drove 8hrs to pick it up and 8hrs home. I think I got a good tractor. 10 yrs old 300 hrs, but was in really good shape. I have been using it for 2 yrs and have had no problems yet. I know it is hard to wait, but it will pay off. ....

I just bought a 855 with a brand new 48" gannon, the hour meter was broke at 670.This tractor looked like something out of a rental yard although I purchased it from a guy that deals in 2nd hand equipment. I bought the unit as is for $3700.00+tax. $4000.00 out the door. I then bought about 400.00 in primer paint & parts stripped off all the sheet metal ,removed the dings ,primed & painted it. Added all the new parts & wahla I now am the proud owner of a very nice tractor that now looks good & works real hard. In all, honestly, had it been anything other than a John Deere in the condition it appeared to be in I would not have even considered it.Its funny cause alot of the metric nuts & flange bolts I bought at a local Hardware store & this saved a bundle. The whole process took me about a week to complete.I feel it was time well spent as not only did I enjoy the "Tinkering" I also learned alot more about the Tractor as well. Part of the $400.00 also covered $150.00 in manuals, these have been the hardest items to get. Everything else I bought was there the next day or 2 days tops.(try & get grey market parts that fast). If you chose to buy a rental unit or any used equipment ,just make sure the Power Train is good, The rest is all replacable, repaintable tin. The Power Train is the real meat & potatoes as well as the most costly to fix if it fails. ....

Slow down there! You are in a price range where there are lots of good tractors. I think that those prices are way too high. For that kind of money you can get an excellent machine. Does it absolutely have to be a JD? Have you tried the "adhound" service? It will get you lots of info in a hurry. Finally, I'd think that you stand a good chance with individual owners rather than dealers or rentals. Maybe you can get one of the people on this list to look over a couple of machines with you and point out what they see. ....

Don, its a service that searches the web for classified ads by keyword and returns a listing of them back to you every day.
"You can stop, start or review your AdHound anytime by clicking on "AdHound" on the Abracat homepage (http://www.abracat.com). Give it a whirl.." ....

One thing for sure,Like Roger said for that kinda money there are alot of nice tractors out there. Heck you can get a new one with no implements for 10 to 12 thousand if that is the price range your dealing in. For myself I couldn't justify spending that kinda money for a piece of equipment that would sit 8 or 9 months out of the year waiting for the rains to come and wash out the road or the weeds & brush to grow to a point thats it needs attention. As I said earlier I payed $4000.00 out the door for mine, which I would be willing to bet looked just like the one your looking at in the rental yards for 10 or $12000. The deals are there, you just have to be patient & seek them out. Good Luck! ....
